Sandrart, Joachim von - Sankt Christophen (5/25)
Sandsteinzone Sandwirt

Sandsteppen

Sandy Steppes, in the sand dunes of the Marchfeld Plain (Lower Austria) rich in limestone, today grass steppe with feather grass and esparto grass and rare sand flora, such as sand-strawflower, late feathered pink and Common Gypsophila. The sandy steppes have been protected against wind-borne sand drifts by reforestation since the 18th  century. The "Sandberg" Mountain near Oberweiden is the highest and most beautiful sand dune in Austria and was declared a nature reserve (steppe flora) in 1959.
