Salm, Count Niklas, b. Niedersalm (Belgium), 1459, d. Salmhof (municipality of Marchegg, Lower Austria), May 4, 1530, supreme commander-in-chief of Ferdinand I. Fought in Burgundy, Italy and Hungary. In the peasants' war of 1526 he conquered Schladming, defended Vienna in 1529 during the first of the two Turkish Sieges of Vienna. Tomb in the Votivkirche, Vienna.
