Rudolf von EmsRudolf von Ems, b. Hohenems (Vorarlberg), around 1200, d. around 1254, erudite Middle High German epic writer. Born into a family of estate officials of the lords of Montfort; modelling his work on the Middle High German "classics" he wrote the chivalric legends "Der guote Gerhart" (1220-1225) and "Barlaam und Josaphat" (1225-1230), the chivalric courtly novels "Alexander" (around 1230, unfinished) and "Willehalm von Orlens" (around 1238) as well as a "Weltchronik" (around 1250, unfinished).
