Riepl, Franz Xaver, b. Graz (Styria), Nov. 29, 1790, d. Vienna, April 25, 1857, mining and railway expert. 1821-1838 professor of natural history and merchandise studies at the Polytechnical Institute in Vienna, 1824 introduced open pit mining in benches at the Erzberg ore mine under Archduke Johann, 1829 first plans for the Kaiser-Ferdinand-Nordbahn (northern railway line) opened in 1837, later worked on the project of an Austria-wide railway network.
