Renz, Ernst Jacob Reptilien

Repolusthöhle

Repolust Cave, cave near Peggau (Styria) in a lateral valley of the River Mur. Several fire-places and stone tools, considered to be the earliest signs of human presence so far in Austria, have been found in the Repolust Cave. They were used by Neanderthal men, who specialised in hunting the cave bear. In the same stratum, dating back to an interglacial period about 300,000 years age, bones of cave bears, wild boars, beavers, badgers and wild cats have been found.
