Studied law. 1937 début as director in Wuppertal; 1946-1956 artistic director of the Hamburg Opera (cultivated a repertoire of contemporary operas and established a permanent company); from 1956 free-lance guest director at all major theatres and opera houses in the world, including Salzburg and Vienna; 1959-1967 artistic director at the Glyndebourne Festival Opera (United Kingdom), 1967-1976 artistic director at the Bavarian State Opera in Munich, 1973 professor of opera direction and dramaturgy; from 1976 again free-lance director; 1978 last complete production of "Rosenkavalier" at the Salzburg Festival; translator of libretti.
