Salzburg, Jan. 23, 1947, studied law; politician (Christian Social party). 1922-1938 Landeshauptmann of Salzburg. Played a vital role in creating the Salzburg Festival (1st Festival theatre), and in constructing the Großglockner-Hochalpenstraße and the Gaisbergstraße as well as several power stations (Fuscher Bärenwerk, Tauernkraftwerk). Was known as a politician who aimed at consensus; after 1934 helped his persecuted social-democratic colleagues; 1938 dismissed from civil service and arrested several times. Literature: ÖBL.
