Redtenbacher, Josef, b. Kirchdorf an der Krems (Upper Austria), March 12, 1810, d. Vienna, March 5, 1870, chemist, brother of Ludwig Redtenbacher; from 1849 professor at Vienna University, where he instigated the building of a Department of Chemistry. Discovered acrolein, acrylic acid and the fermentation of glycerine through yeast; also researched taurine.
