Karlsruhe (Germany), April 16, 1863, engineer. Founder of scientific mechanical engineering; after his studies at the Polytechnical Institute in Vienna 1829-1833 assistant to J. Arzberger, from 1841 professor of mechanics and mechanical engineering in Karlsruhe (1857-1862 Director), Germany´s oldest technical school to whose outstanding reputation R. considerably contributed.
