Rechtsanwalt


Rechtsanwalt (lawyer), practitioner of law whose profession is to advise and represent persons seeking judicial redress or persons involved in legal proceedings. His/her right to represent clients is valid in all Austrian courts and authorities and includes all judicial, extra-judicial, public and private cases. The training of lawyers and their right to exercise the profession are governed by the Rechtsanwalt Act (RGBl 1868/96 as amended). In 1993, there were 3,086 Rechtsanwälte in Austria (1,227 in Vienna, 251 in Lower Austria, 35 in Burgenland, 364 in Upper Austria, 246 in Salzburg, 336 in Styria, 192 in Carinthia, 306 in Tirol, 129 in Vorarlberg) and there were 1,071 candidates for this office.
