Studied philosophy and ethnology in Vienna, 1978-1982 cultural editor of the periodical "Extrablatt". Initially wrote literary reports and essays for various periodicals; his first novel "Die Schrecken des Eises und der Finsternis" (1984) combines documents of the Austro-Hungarian expedition to the North Pole in 1872-1874 with fictitious passages; his novel "Die letzte Welt" (1988) was particularly successful. 1989 Anton-Wildgans prize, 1996 Aristeion Prize of the EU, 1998 Hölderlin Prize, 2004 Bertolt-Brecht-Price.
