Military Ranks in the Austrian Federal Armed Forces are (since 1978): the group of lower ranks and privates: Wehrmann (private), Gefreiter (lance corporal), Korporal (corporal), Zugsführer (platoon sergeant); the group of non-commissioned officers: Wachtmeister (sergeant), Oberwachtmeister (first sergeant), Stabswachtmeister (warrant sergeant), Oberstabswachtmeister (warrant sergeant 1st class), Offiziersstellvertreter (deputy officer), Vizeleutnant (vice lieutenant); commissioned officers: Fähnrich (sub lieutenant), Leutnant (second lieutenant), Oberleutnant (first lieutenant), Hauptmann (captain); staff officers: Major (major), Oberstleutnant (lieutenant colonel), Oberst (colonel); and the general staff: Brigadier (brigadier), Divisionär (major general), Korpskommandant (lieutenant general), General (general). Officers usually head companies, staff officers command small units (battalions and regiments) and generals large ones (brigades, divisions and corps).
