Purbach am Neusiedler SeePurbach am Neusiedler See, Burgenland, town in the district of Eisenstadt-Umgebung, alt. 128 m, pop. 2,348, area 45.84 km2, Wine cultivation and summer tourism resort (26,326 overnight stays in 1992) situated on the north-western shore of the lake. - Recreation centre; production of insulation materials, wood processing. - First documented mention in 1270; settlement on the Burgstall mountain dates back to Hallstatt period, archaeological finds date back to the Romans; parish church (Baroque construction in 1674-1677, altars around 1780); St. Anne´s Chapel (1742); Baroque wayside shrines; the settlement´s core is closed in by city walls (1630-1634) and three gates; old wine-grower farm houses, one of which bears a stone bust of a Turk on its chimney.
