Vienna, Oct. 26, 1876, historian, writer, one of the most important orientalists of his time. Initially ordnance officer, then a diplomat; 1834-1849 represented Austria in Greece, then in Prussia and at the German Confederation, had violent confrontations with O. von Bismarck, 1855-1871 in Turkey. With his masterly descriptions roused Austrian interest in the Near East.
