New York (USA), April 23, 1986, film director and producer. 1923 actor and assistant director under M. Reinhardt (Salzburg Festival). Started with engagements at touring companies, worked his way up to the Volksoper in Vienna (1929-1931) and the Theater in der Josefstadt (manager 1933-1935). 1935 emigrated to the USA, theatre director in New York, assistant to E. Lubitsch, then film director and producer in Hollywood; from 1941 under contract to 20th Century Fox, one of the most important directors in Hollywood; later worked again for the theatre (Broadway). Works: direction: Die große Liebe, 1931/32; Laura, 1944; River of No Return, 1954; Carmen Jones, 1954; Der Mann mit dem goldenen Arm, 1955; Bonjour tristesse, 1957; Porgy and Bess, 1959; Exodus, 1960.
