Prechtler, Johann Otto


Prechtler, Johann Otto, b. Grieskirchen (Upper Austria), Jan. 21, 1813, d. Innsbruck (Tyrol), Aug. 6, 1881, poet, dramatist, epic writer, writer of aphorisms, feature writer and civil servant. Was strongly influenced by the writing of F. Grillparzer, whom he succeeded 1856-1866 as director of the archives of the court chamber (Hofkammer). From 1867 dramatist at the Volkstheater in Munich.


Works: Poetry: Dichtungen, 1836; Gedichte, 1844; Zeit-Accorde, 1873; Neueste Gedichte, 1878. - Dramas: Die blutige Locke, 1833; Die Kronenwächter, 1844; Kg. Heinrich v. Deutschland, 1846; Er sucht seine Braut, 1850; Ein Mann der Tat, 1865. - Novella: Die Freistatt der Götter, 1905.
