Pioneer of technical education in Austria, 1809/1810 director of the Academy of Navigation in Trieste, 1815-1849 founder and director of the Polytechnical Institute in Vienna; drew up its constitution and organisational structure. Constructed a gas production plant with J.Arzberger; founding member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences. Works: Über die Fehler in der Erziehung, 1804; Grundlehren der Chemie in techn.
