Prämonstratenser


Premonstratensians (O Praem), canons. Founded by St. Norbert of Xanten in Prémontré in 1120, soon spread all over Austria, where they dedicated themselves especially to the colonisation and Christianisation of the Slavs. Now establishments in Geras (Lower Austria, founded around 1153), Schlägl (Upper Austria, 1218) and Wilten near Innsbruck (1138). Until 1783 there were convents of Premonstratensian nuns in Vienna, Pernegg (Lower Austria) and Griffen (Carinthia).
