Potocki, Alfred Graf© Copyright Count Alfred Potocki. Photo, around 1875. Potocki, Count Alfred, b. 1822 Lancut (Poland), July 29, 1822, d. Paris (France), May 18, 1889, statesman. Initially in the diplomatic service, 1861 member of the Upper Chamber of the Reichsrat, 1867 Agricultural Minister, 1870-1871 Minister-President as well as Minister of Agriculture and Defence. Advocated neutrality in the Franco-Prussian War 1870, terminated the Concordat of 1855 and re-structured the relationship between Church and State, but failed in his attempt to induce all the nationalities of the monarchy to cooperate in the Reichsrat. Later in Galicia, where he was one of the richest landowners, was marshal of the province (1874) and governor (1875-1883); also worked for organisations concerned with economic policy-making.
