Pius VI (real name: Giovanni Angelo Brasci), b. Cesena (Italy), Dec. 25, 1717, d. Aug. 29, 1799 Valence (France), pope 1775-1799, first pope to visit Austria. On March 14, 1782, reached the Austrian border near Gradisca, stayed in Vienna from March 22 to April 22, then went back via Tyrol and Munich. Did not succeed in his attempts to make Joseph II annul the interventions he had made in Church matters.
