Début at the Schönbrunn Schloßtheater (palace theatre), afterwards engagements in Linz, Basle, Cologne and Munich, from 1963 at the Burgtheater; mainly classical roles (including Emperor Rudolf II in Grillparzer´s "Ein Bruderzwist in Habsburg", for which he received the Grillparzer Ring in 1981), also modern drama (Werner in Sartre´s "Huis clos", Salieri in Shaffer´s "Amadeus", for which he received the Kainz Medal in 1981); from the 1960s at the Salzburg Festival; film and TV work (Abraham a Sancta Clara sermons).
