Paznauntal

Paznaun Valley, Tirol, southwestern lateral valley of the Stanzer Valley, drained by the Trisanna river, stretches from Galtür (alt. 1,584 m), which is situated at the border to the province of Vorarlberg (at the confluence of the streams Vermuntbach and Jambach), to the confluence of the rivers Trisanna and Rosanna near Burgfried (alt. 1,032 m); in the north the valley is flanked by the Verwall Mountains and in the south by the Samnaun Mountains. Near the town of Ischgl the Fimbatal valley (Fimbabach stream) turns to the south. The Trisanna's tributary streams in the south are Jambach and Lareinbach. The Silvretta Alpine Road (Bielerhöhe heights, alt. 2,037 m) connects the Paznaun Valley with the Montafon Valley (Vorarlberg). During the Middle Ages Valaisans (from Valais) who had settled in the Montafon Valley, later settled down here; to this day place names and the names of some work implements recall the Rhaeto-Romans who were the first to settle in this area. Important towns and villages in the valley are Galtür (alt. 1,584 m), Mathon (alt. 1,454 m), Paznaun, Ischgl (well-known ski resort, alt. 1,376 m) and Kappl (alt. 1,256 m).
