On the Pope's side during the Investiture Controversy, which led to a fight with his brother Adalbero, who was on the Emperor's side and who fell in 1086 or 1087. After the Eppensteiner family died out, O. inherited their possessions in the Mur and Mürz valleys; founded the collegiate convent in Garsten, Upper Austria, to which he called the Benedictine order in 1108.
