Oströmisches Reich

Byzantine Empire (Eastern Roman Empire, Byzantium), emerged from the Roman Empire on the basis of Emperor Diocletian's (284-305) tetrarchy when the Roman Empire was divided in 395 and continued until 1453. Events that affected Austria were the destruction of the kingdom of the Ostrogoths 535-553 and Byzantium's victory over the Avars in 622, the family contacts that the Babenbergs established during the first two crusades, and the fact that the Turks, who remained within the borders of the Byzantine Empire until the fall of Constantinople in 1453, only began to intensify their inroads into Central Europe after that date.
