Ortenburg

Ortenburg, Carinthia, ruins southeast of Baldramsdorf in the district of Spittal an der Drau, on the edge of the Lurnfeld basin. The counts of Ortenburg, a branch of the Sponheim family, died out in 1421. In the 16th century, Gabriel de Salamanca, who came to Austria with Ferdinand I of Spain, adopted the name Ortenburg for himself and his descendants. The newer Ortenburg Castle near Baldramsdorf, built around 1720, was a Hieronymite monastery until its secularisation; today it is a crafts museum.
