Officers, ranks in the Austrian Federal Forces: Fähnrich (equivalent to cadet) Leutnant (equivalent to second lieutenant), Oberleutnant (equivalent to first lieutenant), Hauptmann (equivalent to captain), Major (equivalent to major), Oberstleutnant (equivalent to lieutenant-colonel), Oberst (equivalent to colonel), Brigadier (equivalent to brigadier general), Divisionär (equivalent to major general), Korpskommandant (equivalent to lieutenant general), general. Regular officer training is conducted at the Theresianische Military Academy (admission criteria: secondary school graduation; 3 year training programme after one semester of preparatory courses; in order to enrol, candidates have to be not more than 30 years of age). Graduation as second lieutenant is usually followed by field service with the Armed Forces. After their promotion to the rank of first lieutenant, candidates may be admitted to general-staff training (duration: 3 years). Other types of higher officer training include courses in military supplies and infrastructure, military engineering, military health and rescue services and advanced military science (admission criteria: university degree).

A career as reserve officer may be pursued after training in the Einjährig-Freiwillige and upon the completion of various courses and additional weapons training.
