Obernberg am Inn


Obernberg am Inn, Upper Austria, market town in the district of Ried, alt. 354 m, pop. 1,759, area 2.36 km2, on a plateau above the River Inn, at the Austrian-German border. - District court, customs office and branch of the customs guard, road maintenance office, Obernberg am Inn hydroelectric power plant (built in 1944, 42 MW); commerce and trade. - First documented mention in 1160, in the Middle Ages important depot for shipping on the River Inn. In the market square gabled houses with rococo façades: Wörndlehaus and pharmacy (18th century); castle (first documented mention in 1199), extension in 1550; parish church, Gothic three-aisled church with Baroque modifications; St. Anna chapel with Renaissance frescoes and relief in late Gothic style (1520), altars (1838-1846); Gothic branch church (middle of the 15th century); town gates (16th century); fountain in the market square (1658); local history museum in Gurtentor gateway building (history of shipping on the River Inn, gold washing, traditions and folklore of the Innviertel region).
