Nationalgarde

National Guard, established by revolutionaries at the beginning of the revolution on February 14, 1848 in Vienna and later also in all larger municipalities. Its first commander was Field Marshall Lieutenant J. E. Count Hoyos-Sprinzenstein, who was followed by C. W. Messenhauser on October 16, 1848. Rivalries existed with the Military Civic Guards. In the same year the National Guard was dissolved provisionally, in 1851 completely.

Literature: Bürgersinn und Aufbegehren, exhibition catalogue, Vienna 1988.
