Museum für Volkskunde, Österreichisches


Folklore Museum, Austrian (Museum für Volkskunde, Österreichisches), founded in 1895 by M. Haberlandt and W. Hein. Member of the Association of Federal Museums; administered by the Vienna "Verein für Volkskunde" ("Folklore Society"), established in 1894 and publishers of the "Österreichische Zeitschrift für Volkskunde" ("Austrian Folklore Magazine") (1895); since 1917 in Palais Schönborn (Vienna, 8th district). The Folklore Museum houses a comparative collection on ethnography and folk art of the peoples who lived in the western half of the Austrian Monarchy ("Cisleithania") and an exhibition on traditional Austrian folk art, and also shows special exhibitions concentrating on different subjects or regions. A collection on studies about East and South-eastern European folk culture is on display in the Ethnographical Museum in Kittsee Palace; Old Austrian majolicas, furniture and glass are exhibited in the Gobelsburg Castle Museum near Langenlois; religious folk art in the pharmacy of the former Ursuline abbey (Vienna, Johannesgasse street). The museum also comprises a library, photograph collection, print collection and the Archives of Austrian Folklore.
