Famous for his interpretations of Wagner; from 1886 regularly conducted in Bayreuth, made the music of R. Wagner famous in England (1894) and in the USA (1903 at the Metropolitan Opera New York); went to Munich in 1903. Works: Operas, pieces for dances and festivals, lieder, string quartets.
