Moosburg in Kärnten


Moosburg in Kärnten, Carinthia, municipality in the district of Klagenfurt, alt. 503 m, pop. 4,117, area 36.78 km2, summer tourist resort (102,874 overnight stays) north of Lake Wörther See. - Summer toboggan run, SOS Children´s Village, golf course and 1st Carinthian Golf School. - First documented mention in 879 as "Mosapurch", Carolingian palatinate of Moosburg, which cannot, however, be clearly localised; documented mention of Arnulf von Kärnten, duke of Carinthia, Parish church altered around 1765. Grave reliefs from Roman times on the southern exterior wall; murals and Baroque interior (around 1755); beautiful gravestones with coats of arms (16th to 17th centuries). Neue Moosburg Castle on a hill west of Moosburg built in the 16th century, enlarged in the 17th century; two-aisled late Gothic hall and stucco ceiling with half length figures (1590); castle ruin (Hetzelburg), tower (17 m high, 10th /11th centuries) preserved; Ratzenegg Castle (first documented mention 1333, significantly enlarged around 1600) with magnificent rusticated main portal; Tigring Castle (home for the senior citizens). Near Moosburg: lakes Mitterteich and Strußnigteich.
