Montoyer, Louis de

Montoyer, Louis de, b. Mariemont (Belgium), around 1749, d. Vienna, June 5, 1811, architect. Most significant architect of Belgium in the late 18th century, court architect of the governor Duke Albert Kasimir von Sachsen-Teschen, whom he followed to Vienna in 1795. His main works include the hall of ceremonies in Vienna Hofburg Imperial Palace and Rasumofsky Palace (Geological Institute), both completed in 1807. His works are of a monumental style combining baroque and classical elements, a synthesis which was regarded as particularly stately by the Emperor and the nobility.

Works: Vienna: link between the Leopold section and the old Burg, 1801-1802 (hall of ceremonies); adaptation of the Albertina, 1801-1804; adaptation of the Hofburg chapel, 1802; addition of a storey to the Churhaus, 1806; modification of Maltese Church, 1806-1808. - Lower Austria: Redoute (Baden), 1801 (demolished in 1908).
