Mitterwurzer, Friedrich, b. Dresden (Germany), Oct. 16, 1844, d. Vienna, Feb. 13, 1897, actor. 1871 at the Burgtheater (heroic and character roles, including Faust and Mephisto, as well as conflicting, demonic characters). Pioneered naturalness in acting. 1879-1884 main director at the Stadttheater, 1884 manager of the Carltheater in Vienna; 1886-1894 guest performances in Germany, Holland and the USA; 1894-1897 final return to Burgtheater. Also guest speaker and writer (burlesques: Ein Sieg der Geschichte, Strohfeuer, Ein Hausmittel, Der liebe Cousin, Edgars Kammermädchen).
