Missionshaus St. Gabriel


Missionshaus St. Gabriel of the Society of the Divine Word (Steyl Missionaries, SVD - Societas Verbi Divini), in Maria-Enzersdorf near Mödling, founded 1889. The most important Austrian mission house; has produced excellent explorers (like W. Schmidt, M. Gusinde, W. Koppers, P. Schebesta), who went on ethnological expeditions to South America, Central India and Central Africa. The Missionshaus St. Gabriel has its own ethnographical museum (founded 1899),a publishing house, two bookshops and a philosophical-theological university.


Publications: St. Gabrieler Studien; "Stadt Gottes" (family magazine); "Weite Welt" (children´s magazine); St.-Michaels-Kalender.
