Vienna, March 7, 1891, philologist and language philosopher, founder of the modern study of Slavonic languages and literature. 1850-1886 professor at the University of Vienna, member of the Upper Chamber of the Reichsrat. Also researched the history of the Romanian, Albanian and Romany languages; wrote exemplary lexicographical works. Works: Lexicon linguae slovenicae veteris dialecti, 1850 (1862-1865 as Lexicon Palaeuslovenico-graeco-latinum); Vergleichende Grammatik der slawischen Sprachen, 4 vols., 1852-1875; Monumenta Serbica Spectantia Historiam Serbiae, Bosniae, Ragusii, 1858 (ed.); Etymologisches Wörterbuch der slawischen Sprachen, 1886; Über die Mundarten und Wanderungen der Zigeuner Europas, 12 parts, 1872-1880.
