Metternich, Hochadelsgeschlecht


Metternich, aristocratic dynasty since the 14th century, named after the village Metternich near Weilerswist (Germany). 1635 Reichsfreiherren (Barons of the Empire), 1679 Reichsgrafen (Counts of the Empire), 1803 Reichsfürsten (Princes of the Empire), 1813 Austrian princes. In the 16th/17th centuries several ecclesiastical electors came from the Metternich dynasty. In 1803 the family was compensated for losses of territory on the left bank of the Rhine with Ochsenhausen (as the principality of Winneburg) and called themselves Metternich-Winneburg. Among the most prominent personalities belonging to the M. family were Prince Clemens Wenzel Lothar Metternich, Princess Pauline Metternich and Prince Richard Klemens Metternich.
