Merz, Carl eigentlich C. Czell© Copyright Carl Merz, photo 1970 Merz, Carl (real name: C. Czell), b. Brasov, Rumania (then Kronstadt), Jan. 30, 1906, d. Vienna, Oct. 30, 1979 (suicide), writer and revue artist. Came to Vienna in 1924, actor and compère. 1932-1935 one of the leading initiators of Vienna cabaret (among others in "Literatur am Naschmarkt" Kabarett); 1945-1947 in "Lieber Augustin" (1946/47 manager). Together with G. Bronner, M. Kehlmann, K. Nachmann, H. Qualtinger, P. Wehle wrote numerous programmes for cabarets and the "Travnicek" dialogues; scriptwriter, radio and TV productions.
