Merz, AlfredMerz, Alfred, b. Perchtoldsdorf, Lower Austria, Jan. 24, 1880, d. Buenos Aires, Argentina, Aug. 16, 1925, oceanographer. Explored hydrographical features of the Adriatic and Atlantic; from 1914 Professor at the University of Berlin, from 1920 director of the Institute of Oceanography, Berlin; prepared the expedition of the research vessel "Meteor" but fell ill and died during the initial stages of the voyage.
