Land Improvement Measures, measures designed to ameliorate (improve) utilizable agricultural areas. The first systematic drainage plant of the Monarchy was built in Angern an der March in 1856. In 1873 the Institute for Agricultural Engineering (Institut für landwirtschaftliches Ingenieurswesen) at the University of Agricultural Sciences was founded as a forerunner of cultivation technology studies, which were established in 1883. The original principal objective, i.e. drainage, has now become of minor importance. State support for land improvement measures was abolished on January 1, 1994. New tasks such as land protection, i.e. protection against erosion (e.g. wind protective belts) and water have been taken over by the provincial administrative bodies.
