Maschkerer

Maschkerer, derived from the word "mask"; refers to masked persons (moving about alone or in groups). These maskers do not fall into one of the specifically Austrian categories of masks (as for example the Perchten). Maschkerer traditionally appear on the occasion of special customs practised in winter (particularly during the Fasching season), after the completion of some farming tasks (e.g. threshing) and during weddings. (Wedding Customs).
