LuftverkehrAir Transport: Austrian civil air transport is controlled by the following institutions: Federal Ministry of Science and Transport, Austro Control Ges. m. b. H. - Air Traffic Control (formerly: Federal Civil Aviation Office), the provincial governors, Austrian aviation companies (Austrian Airlines, Lauda Air, Rheintalflug), Tyrolean Airways, and the Airports. The first Austrian Aviation Law dates back to 1919, the present law became effective in 1958 (with several amendments); Austria is a member of the International Civil Aviation Organization, ICAO, since 1948 it has been a member of the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale (FAI), which comprises all associations of private pilots. Holders of a pilot license in Austria as of December 31, 1995: 5,078 private pilots, 2,180 professional and airline pilots, 407 helicopter pilots, 225 free balloon pilots, 3,870 glider pilots, 905 parachutists and 6,930 special pilots (hang and paragliders).
