LorettoLoretto, Burgenland, market town in the district of Eisenstadt-Umgebung, alt. 218 m, pop. 326, area 2.38 km2, old place of pilgrimage dedicated to the Virgin Mary, on the north-west slope of the Leithagebirge mountains. Rich excavation finds of the Neolithic, Hallstatt and Roman periods. Documented mention in 1644; Servite monastery (1651); Baroque pilgrimage church (1651-1740), in the cloister (18th century) Loreto chapel (1644) with so-called "Schwarzer Kuchl" (miraculous image of 1644) and picture of the Virgin Mary by an Italian master from the 17th century; in front of the church St. Mary´s column (around 1700); plague column (1680).
