Neukirchen, July 19, 1783, dramatist and poet; theologian; 1754-1759 Prior of the Benedictine Monastery in Lambach, later pastor in Neukirchen, founder of Upper Austrian dialect poetry and important dramatist of the Austrian Enlightenment. Developed the burlesque interludes of the baroque clerical plays into realistic, earthy dialect comedies with an enlightening moralizing character. His plays were set to music, amongst others by J. Haydn ("Die reiche Ceres", in 1780). Works: Der singende Büßer, 1768; Kurzweiliger Hochzeits-Vertrag, 1770; Der versoffene Hans, 1776; Der Teufel im Faß, 1788. - Editions: Sämtliche Dichtungen in obderennsischer Volksmundart, 1822; Lustspiele und Gedichte in oberösterreichischer Mundart, ed. by H.
