Liechtenstein, Prince (from 1608) Karl I, b. Valtice, Czech Republic (then Feldsberg), July 30, 1569, d. Prague (Czech Republic), Feb. 12, 1627, statesman. From 1599 Catholic, 1600-1604 as Lord Steward (until 1607) was responsible for foreign policy under Rudolf II, then served Archduke Matthias (who made him Prince on Dec. 20, 1608), had great influence until 1612 but was then ousted by M. Klesl. Supported Ferdinand II, who in 1620 made him governor and viceroy; commissioned to reorganise Bohemia (Execution of Diet members on June 21, 1622 in Prague) and received the duchies of Troppau, Jägerndorf and more estates in Moravia.
