Liechtenstein, Prince Johannes II, b. Lednice, Czech Republic (then Eisgrub), Oct. 5, 1840, d. Valtice, Czech Republic (then Feldsberg), Feb. 11, 1929, governing Prince of Liechtenstein; cousin of Prince Alfred Liechtenstein and Prince Aloys Liechtenstein. Under him the principality of Liechtenstein (which he ruled as Duke of Austria from 1858) developed ties to Switzerland rather than to Austria; he also organized and expanded the L. art gallery in Vienna, had L. castle in Lower Austria and Fischhorn castle in Salzburg restored, and commissioned H. von Ferstel to build a new building in the Vienna palace (9th district) in place of the Garden Belvedere. Commissioned the gardens in Lednice, Czech Republic (then Eisgrub). Important patron of the arts.
