Leopold I, b. Vienna, before Aug. 4, 1290, d. Strasbourg (France), Feb. 28, 1326, Habsburg, Duke of Austria and Styria, 3rd son of King Albrecht I, brother of Friedrich I (III). Head of the Habsburg family after his parents' death. As administrator of the south western dominions, defeated at Morgarten in 1315 in battle against the Swiss. L. supported his brother Friedrich in his attempts to be elected king and after the defeat at Mühldorf in 1322 intervened to free his captive brothers.
