Leo-Gesellschaft, Österreichische (Austrian Leo Society), founded in 1892 by J. A. Helfert in Vienna. Society for the promotion of Catholic ideas, named after Pope Leo XIII. Was divided into 13 sections (theology, philosophy, history, natural sciences, and others) and comprised around 1,800 members. Pioneers of the Leo Society were F. M. Schindler, H. Swoboda and H. Pernter. The Leo Society published numerous works, held courses, organised congresses, lectures and exhibitions; dissolved in 1938.


Publications: Jahrbuch der Leo-Gesellschaft, 1892ff. (1924-37 Jahrbuch der österreichischen Leo-Gesellschaft) (annuals).
