Politically persecuted and arrested in Hungary in 1952, since 1957 in Austria. 1957-1982 Eastern Europe correspondent for the newspaper "Die Presse", and also 1960-1982 correspondent for the London Financial Times; since 1973 chief editor and co-publisher of the quarterly paper "Europäische Rundschau". 1982-1987 ORF chief editor of the department for Eastern and South Eastern Europe. 1987-1998 director of "Radio Österreich International", the Austrian short wave service. Author of specialised books.
