Hanover (Germany), Nov. 14, 1716, great German philosopher of the Enlightenment, law scholar and mathematician. Came to Vienna 5 times, where he applied in vain for the position of chancellor of Siebenbürgen (Transylvania, 1713), was appointed imperial Aulic Councillor and aimed esp. at establishing an academy of sciences Academy of Sciences, Austrian of which he aspired to become director.
