Lehranstalten für Mode, Bekleidung, Textiltechnik und -chemieSchools of Fashion, Dressmaking and Textile Engineering and Chemistry (Lehranstalten für Mode, Bekleidung, Textiltechnik und Textilchemie) originated in the 2nd half of the 19th century, when schools were founded for socio-political reasons as secondary education was opened to women (Vocational Schools for Women). Private individuals, associations, co-operatives and the state were the initiators. Since 1962 completely included in the organisation of berufsbildende Schulen, today there are höhere gewerbliche Lehranstalten (5 years, qualification for university admission) for fashion and clothing technology, for textile design, creative design (field of textile design), for textile economics as well as höhere technische Lehranstalten (HTL; 5 years, qualification for university admission, right to the title of engineer) for textile engineering and textile management informatics (departments for textile technology and textile management) and for textile chemistry. There are also Fachschulen (vocational secondary schools) with different training periods: the 5-year fashion school of the City of Vienna (founded in 1942, at Hetzendorf Palace) with specialised departments for fashion design and ladies´ tailors, knitwear and machine knitwear, leather wear, millinery and for textile design and textile printing; the 4-year Fachschulen (vocational secondary schools) for fashion and clothing technology (including a special department for menswear), for arts and crafts (department of textile design); the 3-year Fachschulen (vocational secondary schools) for textile technology (departments: weaving and spinning, machine knitting and knitting, machine embroidering, clothing technology) and for textile chemistry; the berufliche Lehranstalt (vocational schools) for weaving (for visually challenged and blind people). In addition there are training courses (e.g. for textile restorers, for costume design and tailoring of traditional costumes), master classes and Kollegs.
